Intermittent claudication is a common manifestation of peripheral arterial disease, its symptoms have a gradual onset and the patient may not notice them initially, instead accepting them as part of the ageing process. The main concern with intermittent claudication is the increased risk of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events. This article highlights the relationship between these diseases and suggests ways to reduce risk and promote best practice.
