Why healthcare professionals are so vital for Breast Cancer Now

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and organisers Breast Cancer Now are spreading the word about detection, types and treatment in creative and impactful ways. Healthcare professionals are an important audience for the charity, given their vital role in promoting breast checking and screening, guiding people through treatment and signposting to support. This year, Breast Cancer Now hopes to engage more with nursing groups and patients in every hospital and healthcare setting to improve care and access to support

This month marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every October, the charity Breast Cancer Now’s teams are hives of activity, spreading the word far and wide about breast cancer detection, types and treatment in creative and impactful ways.

‘One of our “game-changer” areas is to show up in every hospital and healthcare setting, scaling up presence and visibility to engage with staff and patients, improve care and ensure everyone can access support’

Healthcare professionals are an incredibly important audience for us given their vital role in promoting breast checking and screening, guiding people through treatment and signposting to support. And this year, the month signals the start of ambitious work to engage even more closely with this crucial group.

Our new five-year strategy, Change Happens Now, sets out how Breast Cancer Now will go further and faster to realise its vision that everyone with breast cancer will live and live well by 2050. One of our ‘game-changer’ areas – where we’ll focus efforts to make the biggest difference – is to show up in every hospital and healthcare setting, scaling up presence and visibility to engage with staff and patients, improve care and ensure everyone can access support.

Championing patient priorities and pushing for treatment and care improvements

By 2030, we’ll have built on our presence in every NHS trust and private healthcare setting, with people who can champion patient priorities, push for improvements to treatment and care, and raise awareness of our range of in-person and online services, which provide specialised support, trusted information and space to share experiences at all stages of living with and beyond breast cancer.

We also welcome the government’s commitment on Diagnosis Connect, which will aim to help more people with long-term health conditions access charity support services from day one of diagnosis.

Our Here for You service offers healthcare professionals a personalised pathway to refer people with breast cancer to us for information and support.

We’re looking forward to bringing our strategy to life, and building on our work with healthcare professionals, to give the best possible support.
