Treatment of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours

Neuroendocrine tumours are rare, accounting for only 0.5 per cent of all malignancies. This is an often misdiagnosed and under-recognised condition that can lead to years of inadequately managed symptoms, leaving patients feeling distressed, isolated and frustrated. The nurse specialist can educate patients, co-ordinate and implement integrated care and administer symptomatic treatments. A major goal is to improve patients’ experiences by working with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
