Bank shift pay and zero hours contracts: how trusts short-change nurses
Bank work in the NHS is a form of zero-hours contract, says Acas, the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service. Many NHS bank workers also hold a substantive contract with the NHS, yet do not receive overtime pay for bank shifts, nor are they paid at the band that applies in their permanent role. Others for whom bank work is their primary source of income do not receive regular NHS employee entitlements such as sick pay, annual leave and maternity pay. Our interactive story breaks down the savings for NHS trusts of paying nurses bank versus overtime rates, and how much individual nurses miss out on as a result.
